You have made it through the biology, the evidence, and the measurement science. Now you are standing in front of a shelf or scrolling through a product page, and you need to make a decision. This article is about the practical. Everything in Parts 1 through 3 was building to this.
A probiotic label contains a surprising amount of information if you know what to look for. It also contains a surprising number of ways to mislead you if you do not. Here is how to read one clearly.
Knowing which strain to look for is half the work. Knowing whether the product actually contains it is the other half.
Start With the Strain Name, Not the CFU Count
Most people's eyes go straight to the big dose number on the front: 50 billion CFU, 100 billion CFU. That number is almost the last thing that should influence your decision. Start with the strain name.
A complete probiotic strain name has three parts. Genus is the first word, species is the second, and the strain designation comes last. Using a familiar example: Lactobacillus is the genus, rhamnosus is the species, and GG is the strain designation. All three parts together give you Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus GG, which is LGG, one of the most studied probiotic strains in the world.
The strain designation is the most robust way to correlate a probiotic with specific scientific evidence. Without it, it is impossible to guarantee that the microorganism provides the same proven benefits found in the scientific literature. A product listing only Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus with no strain designation may contain a completely different strain with no clinical evidence behind it. The genus and species look the same. The bacteria are not.
Two strains can share the same genus and species but have entirely different properties. Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 299v and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum HEAL9 are both L. plantarum, but they are different strains studied for different outcomes. The strain code is not a formality. It is the identifier that connects the product to the research.
What the Strain Name Tells You to Search For

Once you have the full strain designation, you can verify whether it has clinical evidence. Search the strain code alongside your target condition and see what comes up. If published trials exist and the product dose matches what was studied, you have a more well-founded purchase. If nothing comes up, or the dose is far lower than what appears in the research, the product is not delivering what the label implies.
The conditions with the strongest strain-specific evidence, covered in full in Part 2, map roughly like this:
Antibiotic-associated diarrhea: LGG, Saccharomyces boulardii CNCM I-745
IBS symptom relief: LGG, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 299v
Immune support (older adults and children): LGG, Bifidobacterium breve M-16V, Bifidobacterium lactis HN019, and Lactobacillus rhamnosus HN001
Gut-brain axis / mood: Lactobacillus helveticus R0052 combined with Bifidobacterium longum R0175

CFU Count: What the Number Actually Means
Once you have confirmed the strain has evidence, the CFU count becomes relevant. A few things to know.
More is not always better. Many probiotic supplements contain 1 to 10 billion CFU per dose, but products with higher CFU counts are not necessarily more effective than products with a lower CFU count. The dose that matters is the dose used in the clinical trials for your specific strain and condition. LGG for AAD was studied at 10 to 20 billion CFU. A product with 100 billion CFU of a different Lactobacillus rhamnosus strain with no research is not a better product. It is usually a more expensive one.
For multi-strain products, the label should break down the individual CFU contribution of each strain. A lack of transparency about individual strain CFU counts can be misleading and affect the actual quality of the product. A product listing "Probiotic Blend: 50 billion CFU" without per-strain disclosure may be delivering 49 billion CFU from a cheap, unresearched strain and a token amount of the evidence-backed strain you actually wanted.
At Manufacture vs. At Expiry: The Most Important Label Distinction Nobody Talks About
This is the single most underappreciated label distinction in the entire probiotic category.
A label stating CFU "at time of manufacture" is likely inadequate if you purchase the product close to the end of its shelf life. Most probiotic strains suffer cell count decline over the course of shelf life. ISAPP advises manufacturers to list CFU through the expiration date, and suggests consumers avoid products that list CFU only at time of manufacture.
What you want to see: "X billion CFU guaranteed through expiry" or "potency guaranteed to best-by date." What you want to avoid: "X billion CFU at time of manufacture" with no expiry guarantee.
Reputable manufacturers account for die-off by overformulating at manufacture, so the product still meets its label claim at expiry. A product guaranteeing 10 billion CFU at expiry under proper storage is a more reliable label than a product claiming 50 billion at manufacture with no guarantee.
Green Flags and Red Flags
These are the signals that separate a well-made product from a marketing exercise.
Green flags:
Full genus, species, and strain designation listed for every strain
CFU or AFU count guaranteed through expiry, not just at manufacture
Per-strain CFU breakdown on multi-strain products
Storage instructions that are specific and match the product format (refrigerate if required, shelf-stable if tested)
Third-party testing certification from SuppCo, NSF International, or USP
Red flags:
Strain listed only to genus and species level with no strain code
"Proprietary probiotic blend" with a total CFU count but no per-strain disclosure
CFU count stated only at time of manufacture
No storage instructions or expiry guarantee
Vague health claims with no condition-specific language
According to FAO/WHO guidelines, every probiotic label should include genus, species, and strain designation for each probiotic strain in the product. That is the baseline. Anything less and you cannot connect the product to research.
Refrigerated vs. Shelf-Stable vs. Spore-Forming

One more distinction worth understanding before you buy.
Refrigerated probiotics typically contain Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains that require cold storage to maintain viability. If a refrigerated product has been sitting at room temperature in a warehouse or on an unrefrigerated shelf, you have no way of knowing how many bacteria survived. Buy refrigerated products from retailers with reliable cold chain management, and store them properly at home.
Shelf-stable probiotics use freeze-drying and moisture-barrier packaging to maintain viability at room temperature. Quality varies significantly by manufacturer. Look for third-party testing and expiry guarantees specific to shelf-stable conditions.
Spore-forming probiotics such as Bacillus coagulans and Bacillus subtilis are inherently resilient. They generally do not require refrigeration and can survive stomach acid without protective coatings. They are a legitimate format with real evidence behind certain strains. They are also heavily marketed by lower-quality brands because the spore format masks viability problems that would be visible in less hardy strains.
The format is not a quality signal on its own. The strain, the evidence, and the expiry guarantee are.
A Practical Purchasing Framework
You now have everything you need. Applied in order, this is the decision process:
Identify your goal. What condition or outcome are you targeting? Gut symptoms, immune support, post-antibiotic recovery, something else?
Find the strain with evidence for that goal. Part 2 names them with citations. A quick search of the strain code and condition will tell you whether the research is there.
Confirm the product lists the full strain designation. Genus, species, and strain code. All three.
Check the CFU count against the studied dose. More is not better. Match is better.
Verify the expiry guarantee. "At time of manufacture" is not enough. Look for "guaranteed through expiry."
Check storage requirements and confirm the product has been handled accordingly. A refrigerated probiotic stored at room temperature is a dead probiotic.
Look for third-party testing. NSF, USP, or ConsumerLab verification means someone other than the manufacturer has checked what is in the bottle.
That is the whole framework. It takes about two minutes once you know what to look for, and it separates a well-founded purchase from a $40 jar of marketing.
The microbiome is one of the most dynamic and consequential systems in your body. The science behind it is moving fast, and the evidence for targeted probiotic interventions is stronger than it has ever been. The tools to navigate it are all on the label. You just have to know how to read it.
