Science Corner 70 | Do you need electrolytes?

I use electrolytes almost every single day. I don't need them. And I'm willing to guess that you don't either.
Americans consume about 3,400 mg of sodium per day on average, well above the federal recommendation of less than 2,300 mg daily. For some people, estimates put actual intake over 4,000 mg when you account for 24-hour urinary excretion data. More than 70% of that comes from packaged and prepared foods, not the salt shaker.
Popular electrolyte supplements can add anywhere from 300 mg to 1,000 mg of sodium on top of that. For most people eating a typical American diet, that's not better health... It's just more salt.
The electrolyte industry is pushing a population that's already eating too much salt... to take more of it.
Electrolytes Explained

Electrolytes are minerals that carry an electrical charge when dissolved in fluid. Your body uses them to move water in and out of cells, fire nerve signals, contract muscles, and regulate pH.
The main ones:
Sodium manages fluid volume and is abundant in the American diet frequently to the point of excess. Human kidneys are good at holding onto it and excreting what is unnecessary under normal conditions.
Chloride helps regulate cellular fluid balance and your body’s acid-base (pH) level. It travels with sodium and is similarly plentiful in most diets.
Bicarbonate is the body's primary pH buffer, neutralizing acids produced during metabolism. Unlike the others, it isn't consumed through food; the kidneys and lungs regulate it continuously. Deficiency usually signals an underlying health condition, not necessarily a dietary gap.
Potassium is a different story. The current adequate intake is 3,400 mg per day for adult males and 2,600 mg per day for adult females, and the U.S. dietary guidelines identify it as a nutrient of public health concern because the vast majority of Americans fall short.
Magnesium isn’t much better. Approximately 50% of Americans consume less than the estimated average requirement, with some age groups falling substantially below that.
Calcium and phosphate round out the main electrolytes. Phosphate is rarely a concern for people eating a varied diet, but calcium is a different story. Roughly 45% of Americans fall short of the recommended daily intake, with adolescent girls and older women at the highest risk of deficiency.
The minerals many people don’t get enough of in their diet are potassium and magnesium. The one already consumed in excess is sodium.
Who Needs Electrolyte Supplements
There are real scenarios where this makes clinical sense.
Athletes and heavy exercisers. Sweat losses during prolonged, intense activity can absolutely deplete sodium. Sweat rate during exercise roughly ranges from roughly 0.5 to 2.0 L per hour, with sodium concentration in sweat ranging from roughly 230 mg to 2,070 mg of sodium/ liter of sweat. This means we can lose a lot of sodium when exercising, but losses vary widely depending on the individual, intensity, and environment. A higher-sodium electrolyte product may be appropriate for someone running long distances in summer heat. For a 45-minute indoor gym session, the math just doesn't hold up.
People with specific medical conditions. Some conditions require elevated sodium intake as part of clinical management and certain GI conditions cause substantial electrolyte losses. A physician recommendation to increase sodium is categorically different from a general wellness assumption.
People doing physical labor or working outdoors in heat. Extended sweat exposure can produce substantial losses worth replacing.
People who have tested their levels. A thorough metabolic panel that flags low electrolyte levels can give you something to act on. Without that data, you're supplementing against an unknown baseline.
For most other people buying these products, the case for a high-sodium electrolyte supplement is not as strong.
Potassium and magnesium are the electrolytes many Americans are actually short on. If there's a mineral gap worth addressing, those are the more likely candidates than sodium.
Four Questions Worth Asking

Do you need them? Look at your diet, your activity level, and your lab results before assuming the answer is yes. The marketing creates a feeling of necessity. The data, for most people, doesn't back it up.
What specifically do you need? Electrolyte blends are not targeted interventions. If potassium is the issue, a potassium supplement can address it more directly than a high-sodium blend. Magnesium can be taken on its own and has well-documented roles in sleep, muscle recovery, and metabolic function.
How should you take them? If you want an electrolyte product, look for a low-sodium formula unless a specific reason points the other way. Some products contain more sodium per serving than a slice of deli meat. Read the label.
Why are you taking them? Supplementing because you thought about it and decided it makes sense for you is different from supplementing because the internet told you to.
If your lab results and lifestyle show a gap, you can fill it with something targeted. If you enjoy an electrolyte drink in the afternoon and it fits your routine, that's a reasonable personal choice. Just be clear with yourself about which one it is.

I told you at the top of this article that I use electrolytes every day and don't need them. I owe you the rest of that story.
It started a few years ago when I was looking for a way to get through the afternoon without yet another caffeine hit. I landed on a low-sodium electrolyte powder mixed into sparkling water (and yes, it is in my stack). Cold, a little fizzy, something to look forward to around 3 pm. It worked, not because of anything the electrolytes were doing physiologically, but because it gave me a ritual that wasn't caffeine.
I chose a low-sodium formula deliberately. I track my ApoB and fasting glucose closely enough to be thoughtful about anything that nudges my cardiovascular risk in the wrong direction, and my sodium intake through food is already well above what I need. The electrolyte content isn't the point. The taste is the point. The sparkling water is the point. The decision to not pour more caffeine into an already wired system is the point.
I don't think that's a bad reason to take something. But I also prefer to know exactly what I'm doing and why. A lot of people reaching for these products don't have that clarity, and the industry isn't exactly rushing to provide it. If this article gives you one useful thing, I hope it's the habit of asking "why" before you open the packet.
