Inside the Formula | XYMOGEN: The Brand a Doctor Kept Picking… Without Knowing It

With XYMOGEN & TESTED by SuppCo: Inside the Formula is a new sponsored series featuring brands in the TESTED by SuppCo certification program, where we spotlight the fascinating research behind products that have received the certification. Learn more about TESTED by SuppCo.
James Munro, ND ran a blind test almost by accident. As a naturopathic physician working inside a large integrative medicine clinic, he had access to white-labeled products from every major practitioner brand on the market. Over the years, he recommended many of them to patients. Because everything was white-labeled, he had no brand loyalty at the time. He just wanted what would work best for his patients.
At some point, he wanted to know what he'd been sharing with his patients. The clinic private-labeled everything, so he pulled a spreadsheet that matched each in-house product name to the manufacturer behind it. His own prescribing pattern was sitting right there. Nearly every product on his list of favorites traced back to one company.
After realizing how much he valued the XYMOGEN products, Dr. Munro joined as an advisor and soon after became the brand's Medical Director and Senior Director of Innovation, offering a glowing perspective on the brand’s philosophy. XYMOGEN is now certified through the TESTED by SuppCo program, which checks a supplement's label against what's in the bottle. And Dr. Munro says the company was already prepared for the certification program because of their rigorous in-house testing and quality control standards.
Efficacy Over Profits
XYMOGEN was founded in 2003 by Brian Blackburn, Sr, and is still run day to day by the Blackburn family. Dr. Munro says that family structure explains the overall company philosophy, especially pertaining to what goes into the bottle.
Take magnesium bisglycinate. The name on a label can hide measurable differences in potency, carrier, and the research behind a specific supplier's version. Two products can list the identical ingredient and perform nothing alike. Dr. Munro estimates that many buyers have no way to tell the difference and would never notice if a company switched to a cheaper version without saying so. XYMOGEN doesn't use cost to make switching decisions. The company spends weeks to months vetting a single ingredient before it goes into a formula, checking documentation and consistency rather than shopping for the lowest price at the time of manufacturing.
That estimate and that timeline come from Dr. Munro's own vantage point inside the company, the kind of detail you only get from someone who has spent years working alongside the people who set the standard. TESTED independently verifies that XYMOGEN's label matches what's in the bottle. As to the Blackburn family's day-to-day involvement: walk into the Orlando headquarters, Dr. Munro says, and the doors are open; the family's there.
Dr. Munro describes a pattern: when a decision comes down to the ethically cleaner option or the more profitable one, the family takes the former, no matter what the gap is between the two. He says that pattern, repeated for two decades, is why clinical staff trust the company.
"They won't cut those corners. They don't have shareholders to answer to."
Built From the Field, Not a Boardroom
Early XYMOGEN products came from talking to practitioners directly. A clinician would call with a formula that worked, or two ingredients that seemed to work better together, and XYMOGEN would build it. That process has since been formalized into a medical advisory board. But the source is still the same: a specialist naming a specific need, vs a category trending on social media.
Today, the company splits its products into two lines that share the same sourcing standard, but serve different audiences. XYMOGEN covers general medical use. XYMOGEN Athletix® is built for people using their bodies at a recreational-to-professional level. They have a separate athletics advisory board, made up of athletic trainers and dietitians who work with professional sports organizations.
Practitioner-First by Design
XYMOGEN was founded with the goal of partnering with healthcare professionals to make clean, high-quality formulations. XYMOGEN originally launched as a practitioner-exclusive brand, and stayed that way for most of its history.
That changed, partially, after COVID. XYMOGEN moved to selling direct to consumer, but the core model didn't disappear. XYMOGEN still encourages consumers to work with healthcare professionals and is committed to providing education to meet wellness seekers where they are in their health journey. Dr. Munro frames it as the same logic that shaped the ingredient decisions: a shorter path to revenue existed, and the company didn't take it.
Two decades is a long time for a business model to hold. Retail supplement sales moved almost entirely online over that stretch, and plenty of practitioner-first brands loosened the rule once direct-to-consumer sales got easy. Dr. Munro's point is that XYMOGEN may have added new sales channels… But it didn't give up on the practitioner relationships in the process.
The Bottom Line
My favorite part of the conversation? Dr. Munro says XYMOGEN needed no preparation to pass TESTED. Because the company has held itself to that same bar internally for more than twenty years. Nothing about the process needed them to change anything.
We didn't do anything to prepare for TESTED. We've had this covered for more than twenty years.
Dr. Munro knew this years before TESTED did. He wasn't chasing a family-owned brand or a certification, just whatever worked for his patients, and he kept landing on XYMOGEN.
XYMOGEN, welcome to the TESTED by SuppCo family.
