Science Corner 12 | Truth in Supplements: SuppCo Launches Independent Testing Program

The supplement industry is massive, influential, and deeply personal. People take supplements to improve their health, their energy, their sleep, their strength, and their lives. But for all its size and significance, the industry still suffers from one major problem: a lack of trust.
At SuppCo, we exist to help people understand what supplements they should take, and why. But part of answering that question means going beyond just ingredients and mechanisms. It means asking: What’s really in the bottle?
Today, we’re launching the SuppCo Tested, an independent initiative to evaluate the quality, potency, and purity of supplements on the market. This program is built on science, not sponsorship. It’s not influenced by industry relationships. We’re not taking product samples directly from brands. We’re buying them ourselves, testing them ourselves, and reporting the results ourselves.
Why Testing Matters
The FDA regulates supplements under a framework that puts the responsibility of quality control on the manufacturers. While many companies take that responsibility seriously, investing in third-party testing, clean sourcing, and GMP manufacturing, others don’t. And because testing isn’t required in the way many people assume, the result is a flood of products with inconsistent quality.
That’s where independent testing comes in.
When a supplement is tested properly, we’re looking at more than just the name on the label. A full-quality evaluation may include items such as:
Potency Testing – Does the product contain the dose of the active ingredient it claims?
Identity Testing – Is the compound what it says it is?
Purity Testing – Is the product free from contaminants like heavy metals, BPA, phthalates, or solvents?
Microbial and Mycotoxin Screening – Are there dangerous bacteria, molds, or fungal toxins present?
Adulteration Screening – Has the product been spiked with undeclared or illegal compounds to create an effect?
This kind of testing is important not just for consumers, but for the entire industry. The best supplement companies, the ones doing it right, want this level of scrutiny, because it validates their commitment to quality. The companies cutting corners are the ones who don’t.
SuppCo’s Role: 100% Independent, 100% Transparent
The SuppCo Tested is not funded, sponsored, or influenced by the companies whose products we test. We do not partner with brands prior to testing. We do not accept samples directly. Every product is purchased anonymously, off the shelf or online, just like a customer would.
This is a program designed for you, our users. We pay for the testing directly, and candidly, we lose money on it because we believe in the greater goal of supplement transparency.
All of our testing is done through a completely independent third-party lab with no ties to the brands involved. We are committed to maintaining that separation.
If we do partner with any companies in the future to help test their products or their product categories, we will disclose that relationship clearly, and the testing will still be performed through the same unbiased, third-party process.
This program is not about catching companies in a “gotcha” moment. It’s about surfacing the truth, both the good and the bad. If a product passes with flying colors, we’ll say so. If it doesn’t, we’ll say that too. Either way, we’re committed to the truth, because consumers deserve it.
Starting with Creatine

We’re kicking things off with one of the most studied and widely used supplements in the world: creatine. It should be a straightforward product, yet differences in quality, purity, and actual creatine content can be significant across brands.
We’ve independently purchased and tested a range of popular creatine products for:
Identity confirmation (is it really creatine monohydrate?)
Creatine per serving compared to label claims
Percent creatine content
Creatinine byproduct content
Presence of heavy metals, BPA, and phthalates
Adulterants and contaminants
Our results are coming next week, and in the coming months we’ll continue building out this program across categories like protein powders, adaptogens, longevity compounds, and more.
In the future we’ll also shine a spotlight on trendy nutrients where we suspect a well-studied or hyped ingredient has attracted bad actors.
Truth Over Hype
The supplement industry doesn’t need more marketing, it needs more clarity. SuppCo is here to help deliver that, by serving as a source of truth that both consumers and responsible companies can rely on.
Testing is just one part of our mission, but it’s a critical one. Because you should make decisions based on facts, not hype.

Personal note from Jordan
Selfishly, I’m really excited about this. Like a lot of you, I’ve always wondered: What’s actually in the supplements I take every day? I’ve spent years in labs, reading labels, building formulas—and even I don’t always know for sure. This testing program is our chance to pull back the curtain. Not to shame, but to see. And I think it’s going to be eye-opening—not just for consumers, but for the entire industry. I hope you follow along. I think it’s going to change the way we all think about supplements.
