Do Diet Drinks Come at a Cost to Cognition? New Research Links Artificial Sweeteners to Memory Loss
Artificial sweeteners have become a fixture in modern diets. They are marketed as sugar-free solutions for weight management, diabetes prevention, and healthier living. From diet sodas to “light” yogurts, they promise sweetness without the calories. But a new study published in Neurology raises important questions about what these substitutes might be doing to our brains over time.
The researchers tracked thousands of adults for more than a decade to explore how use of artificial sweeteners related to changes in memory, thinking speed, and risk for dementia. While sugar itself carries risks for brain health, this study suggests that its artificial stand-ins may not be the safe alternative many assume.

Artificial sweetener use: 37% of participants reported regular consumption of products containing aspartame, sucralose, or saccharin

The findings are not isolated. Previous research has hinted that artificial sweeteners can alter the gut microbiome, disrupt glucose metabolism, and potentially affect brain signaling pathways. This study builds on those concerns by showing a direct link to cognitive decline at the population level. While the results cannot prove causation, the dose-response pattern strengthens the case that long-term use may be more than a harmless habit.
For consumers, the practical takeaway is not that an occasional packet of sweetener or diet soda will cause harm. Instead, it is the cumulative, daily reliance on these substitutes that appears to carry risk. If brain health is a priority, swapping out artificial sweeteners for water, tea, or even small amounts of natural sweeteners like honey or stevia may be the smarter long-term move.
